Saab cars made since 1994 have an immobilizer system built on coded keys. To add an additional key, you need an entirely new transponder and programming. This is usually done by the dealer using a Tech2 diagnostic tool.

The problem is that it can be quite costly. This is why you should always have a spare key on hand.

Transponder key

The transponder is a key equipped with an electronic chip. This chip sends a signal when the key is placed into the ignition. The car will then check the signal to determine whether it is identical to the one in the key. If the signals are in sync the car will then unlock and begin. This is a great method to stop auto theft and keep your car safe from thieves.

Transponder keys are a popular addition to cars, but they're not as secure as traditional metal keys. While the metal parts of a traditional key can be cut and copied but a transponder key is protected by an electronic chip. The chip has a unique code which is programmed into a car's computer order to identify it.

The car will recognize the Saab keyfob, and allow it to turn on. The car will only recognize the key fob if it is equipped with an unmodified chip and programmed to match. Otherwise, the car would reject the key and not start.

It's not a standard way to go about it, but you need to consider how you will route and solder each column and row. There are 22 microcontroller wires as well as pins to connect for this keyboard. It has 5 rows and 17 column.

After the columns and rows are soldered, it's time to connect them to the key switches. To do this, place an inverter over each key switch pin and then solder it. This will shield the pins from current, and prevent them from getting shorted. A diode can only allow current to flow in one direction, and it has a black band visual indicator that shows the direction in which current will flow.

Jump-starting the battery

The majority of people have the set in their trunk to jump-start a vehicle in the event of an emergency, but this might not be a good option for vehicles with newer technology. These cars have a variety of computers and digital devices that communicate with each other. A voltage surge while a battery is hooked up to another could cause damage to these components, rendering your vehicle undriveable.

Connect the cables to the vehicle that is working. Let it run for two minutes. Attach the red clip to the positive terminal of the good battery. (It will read "POS" or "+".) Attach the other end of the black cable to a clean, unpainted metal surface beneath the damaged car's hood. The engine block would be an ideal choice. The black cable is not to be connected to the negative terminal of the dead battery. This could result in sparks, which could ignite the gasoline that is in the engine compartment.

It's much cheaper rather than wait until you loose the only key.
