If the changes to your environment aren't enough to allow you to succeed in school or at work You may be able to benefit from medications. These medications can be either long-acting or short-acting and include the methylphenidate (such as Ritalin) and amphetamines salts.

In the UK, stimulants are the most commonly prescribed adhd without medication medications. They are offered first unless you have another condition that requires different medication.

Stimulants

It increases activity in the areas of the brain that regulate attention and behavior which improves concentration and reduces hyperactive and impulsive behavior. It can be taken in the form of immediate-release tablets, taken 2 or 3 times a day or modified-release capsules that release the medication throughout the day.

Lisdexamfetamine stimulates certain areas of the brain, which increases concentration and aids in focusing the mind. It also reduces the tendency to be impulsive. It is usually prescribed to teenagers, adults, and children above five years of age when methylphenidate is not effective. Lisdexamfetamine tablets are usually taken in three or two doses a day. Atomoxetine is a different medicine than the other ones and is prescribed to teenagers, adults and children (age 5plus) who are not able to take methylphenidate and lisdexamfetamine due to side effects. It is a selective Noradrenaline-Reuptake Inhibitor (SNRI). It increases the amount of noradrenaline which transmits messages between brain cells and increases concentration and impulse control. It is taken as a tablet or an oral solution every day.

A vast number of randomized controlled trials and observational studies have examined the benefits and harms of drug treatment for adult adhd. These studies compared the different drugs to placebos and other drugs, but not all included head-to-head trials. This study combines the results of these trials using a method known as a network meta-analysis. This is the most comprehensive study of ADHD to date, and it strengthens NICE's guidelines for prescribing medications for adults suffering from ADHD.

The results show that a large percentage of people suffering from ADHD are able to benefit from a medication. It is important to carefully consider the potential risks and benefits prior to taking any medication. People should discuss this with a doctor and, if needed you can take steps to manage the symptoms of the condition using other methods, including treatment and lifestyle changes. It is also crucial to recognize any medical condition which could trigger or exacerbate symptoms of ADHD, such as narcolepsy, sleep apnea, thyroid disorders, depression, and lead poisoning. A thorough medical history and a thorough examination are essential to determine possible causes for the symptoms. Patients with an extensive history of drinking or substance abuse must be treated with extreme care. Referral to a specialist may be required. Patients who have had a history of developmental disorders or other serious mental health problems need to be assessed more thoroughly and recommended for specific tests and evaluations as necessary. This could include a thorough family history as genetic factors have been known to be involved in ADHD.
